Tamilnadu Open University

Alagappa University accredited with ‘A’ Grade by National Assessment and Accreditation Council (NAAC) is located at Karaikudi in Tamil Nadu .This University has emerged from the galaxy of institutions initially founded by the great philanthropist and educationist Dr. RM. Alagappa Chettiar.
 
Alagappa University was brought into existence by a Special Act of the Government of Tamil Nadu in May 1985 with the objective of fostering research, development and dissemination of knowledge in various branches of learning. The University offers education through Regular, Week-end, Distance and Collaborative modes. The Distance Education Directorate offers variety of programmes to the student community spread across the country and in selected foreign countries. Through all modes of education, the University caters to the needs of the student community of around 1,00,000.
 
As a member of the Association of Indian Universities (AIU), as well as the member of the Association of Common Wealth Universities (ACU), it has rewarding relations with other academic institutions, research laboratories and industrial establishments that promise a spectacular feature.
 
The University is having International Collaborations with Universities / Institutions of Higher Learning in countries like China, Malaysia, West Indies, U.S.A. and South Korea. New innovative programmes suitable are designed and offered at the University (for the foreign students). Many exchange programmes attract the attention of the teachers and students from abroad.

Ex-post facto approval from DEC
 
The Distance Education Council (DEC), New Delhi has accorded ex-post facto approval for 108 programs (order No.F.No.DEC/AU/KKD/TN/4425/2008, dated 24.11.2009) offered through the distance mode of Alagappa University, Karaikudi, with effect from 1995 to the academic year 2007-08.
 
Prior to 1995, the certificates issued by the University stand automatically recognized as they were approved by the relevant authorities of the University as stated by DEC. The approval was given to the University based on the recommendation of the Expert Committee, the Distance Education Council, New Delhi.
 
Recognition from DEC
 
Consequent to the inspection visit made by an Expert Team (Joint Action Committee)comprising of UGC-AICTE-DEC to the Alagappa University, the DEC has accorded recognition to various programs offering through Distance mode (vide F.No.DEC/Recog/2010/2289 dated 04.08.2010. Further, this recognition is valid for a period of three years till 2012-13.
 
About Directorate of Distance Education
 
The Directorate of Distance Education was established in the University in 1992. The Directorate offers Under Graduate and Post Graduate Programmes in the disciplines of Management, Computer Applications, Science, Education and Languages.
 
The Directorate offers various innovative, job-oriented and socially relevant 57 academic programmes in the field of Arts, Science, Information Technology, Education and Management. It has a Study Centre in chennai for providing effective service to the student community.

The Directorate in addition to general MBA, offers more specialised sector-specific management programmes such as MBA (International Business), MBA (Investment Management), MBA (Banking and Finance), MBA (Corporate Secretaryship), MBA (Project Management), MBA (Hospital Management), MBA (Tourism), MBA (Education Management) and MBA (Human Resource Management) and also offers MCA, and PGDCA Programmes, under Semester pattern.
 
The Directorate is planning to adopt the e-technologies in order to modernize the learning process so that the students can have direct access to internet facilities. With the proposed campus wide networking, it would be possible to organize learning with the satellite facilities. This would help the University to update its instructional modes and open new vistas of e-learning for the students.
